Plant Biology Flashcards
What is the equation of photosynthesis?
Light
Carbon dioxide+ water —-> Oxygen + glucose
Chlorophyll
Doing an experiment what conditions where best to grow seeds?
We needed warmth, water, oxygen and light
What does the epidermis do?
Protects leaf, stops bacteria and virus getting in
What does the palisade mesophyll do?
Most photosynthesis happens here cells are packed with chloroplast
What does the spongy mesophyll do?
Some photosynthesis happens here, less chloroplasts than palisade, allows easy movement of gases
What does the vein do?
Carries water in xylem, food in phloem
What do the guard cells do?
Increase and decrease to control the size of the stomata
What does the stomata do?
Small pores that let gas and water out of the leaf. Mostly on the bottom
In the experiment why was the leaf boiled?
To kill the leaf and stop reactions
Why where the leaves boiled in ethanol during the experiment.
To remove the chlorophyll
What colour indicates the presence of starch in the leaf?
Yellow/brown to blue/black
Why do plants have to respire at night?
Because there is no light for photosynthesise
What do the plants use to respire at night?
The glucose they produce when photosynthesising.
What happens when the rate of photosynthesis is higher than respiration?
The oxygen leaves via the stomata
What happens when there is no photosynthesis?
The carbon dioxide leaves the leaf via the stomata and oxygen moves into the leaves.
