Plant Biodiversity and Floras Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The variability among living organisms from all sources including inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and ecological complexes of which they are part: this includes diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystem
What concepts does biodiversity reflect?
Species richness: the number of different species that are represented in a given an ecological community, landscape or region
Species abundance: the relative representation of a species in a particular ecological community, landscape or region
What is a species?
Groups of populations that resemble each other relatively closely and other groups of populations less closely are called species
What are fertile hybrids?
Capable of reproducing offspring which are fertile
What are sterile hybrids
Cannot reproduce sexually
What is hybrid vigour?
Hybrids between dissimilar lines or different species that outperform either parent and showing faster growth or other desirable characteristics
What is a flora?
The record of biological diversity of plants in a particular area
What are herbariums?
Plant museums
True or false: every known plant has a type of specimen which is the definitive individual for a given species
