plant animal repro and development Flashcards
what is development
formulation of specialized cells in organisms
what are the 3 major overlapping processes of development
- cell divison
- morphogenesis
- cell differentiation
what is morphogenesis
growth, shaping and structural arrangement of cells
what is cell differentiation
cell specialization
describe the 2- cell stage
happens after zygote undergoes mitosis. consists of terminal cell and basal cell
what is the globular stage
proembryo, develops into meristematic tissue
What does the suspensor do
divided cells below the globular stage area that shuttle nutrients from endosperm to embryo
what is a blastula
a fluid filled ball of 128 cells or more
what is a gastrula
occurs after blastulation, looks like blastula is being folded in half
what is the apical/ terminal cell
the top cell in the 2- cell stage, turns into shoots
what is the basal cell
the bottom cell in the 2- cell stage, turns into roots
what is the cotyledon
embryonic seedling leaves, heart shapped under microscope
what is imbibition
this is the initial step in seed germination. The water moves into ovules which are ripening into seeds by imbibition
what is the hypocotyl
the embryonic axis that bears the seedling leaves (cotyledons)
what is indeterminate growth
growth that doesn’t stop when under healthy conditions
