plant + animal adaptions tropical rainforests Flashcards
what must plants and animals adapt to in tropical rainforests
high temperatures, high rainfall, competition for sunlight
what are buttress roots?
adapted tree roots that spread out across a very wide area and go deep underground
why is the fact that buttress roots are spread so far wide and deep helpful to the roots?
it allows them to absorb more nutrients
what is the drawback of buttress roots?
they spread so wide that they take nutrients which other plants would have used, increasing competition
what do the waxy coating on leaves do to help the leaves in tropical rainforests?
helps the plants to resist rain: without waxy coating, the leaves could absorb rain and become so heavy that they are pulled downward
what do the pointed tips of leaves in tropical rainforests do to help the plant?
pointed tips allow water to run off the leaf and prevent too much water entering the leaf and making it too heavy
how does the smooth, thin bark on trees in tropical rainforests help them survive?
usually, bark is thick to maintain high water levels. but in the tropical rainforest, the priority is not having too much water, so the smooth and thin bark allows water to run off the tree
how are flying squirrels adapted to survive in the tropical rainforest?
flying squirrels have evolved wings allowing them to glide between trees
how are chameleons adapted to survive in the tropical rainforest?
chameleons can change their colour to whatever it is behind them
how are sloths adapted to survive?
they are nocturnal meaning they can preserve energy and only hunt or move when temperatures are lower in night
