Plant and Animal Cells Flashcards
What are the sub-cellular structures in an animal cell?
Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, Ribosomes, Mitochondria.
What are the sub-cellular structures in a plant cell?
Nucleus, Vacuole, Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, Cell wall, Chloroplasts, Ribosomes, Mitochondria.
What does a nucleus contain?
A nucleus contains genetic material arranged into chromosomes.
What is the function of a nucleus?
The genetic material within a nucleus control the activities which take place within a cell.
What is the cytoplasm?
A gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen.
What does the cytoplasm contain?
Enzymes which control the chemical reactions taking place within it.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It holds the cell together, and controls what enters and leaves the cell.
What occurs in the mitochondria?
Most of the reactions for respiration take place in the mitochondria.
What is the function of ribosomes?
The are involved with the translation of genetic material in the synthesis of proteins (where proteins synthesise).
What is the function of the cell wall?
To support the cell and strengthen it.
What is the cell wall made out of?
Cellulose.
What does the vacuole contain?
Cell sap which is a weak solution of sugars and salts.
What is the main function of the vacuole?
To maintain the internal pressure for supporting the cell.
What do the chloroplasts contain?
Chlorophyll.
What happens in the chloroplasts?
Photosynthesis occurs and provides food for the plant.
