Plant and Animal adaptations Flashcards
Describe the epiphytes, and their adaptations in rainforests.
Epiphytes are leaves which are attached to the branches of trees high up in the Canopy layer, and they get their nutrients from water vapour and air.
* They’re adapted in there, because they’ve got aerial roots, which gets moisture from the humid atmosphere, rather than relying on ground water.
Define Buttress roots.
They’re huge and large tree roots, which the tallest trees of the rainforests are adapted with for them to be supported, and kept safe.
- Have a large surface area to be able to support the trees
What are the drip tips and their adaptations?
They’re leaves which have pointy tips to let the rainwater or water run off the leaves, preventing any fungus growth or rotting.
What are the straight tree trunks and their adaptations?
The straight tree trunks are very tall, and thin trunks which the trees are adapted with **to be able to get the highest amount of sunlight possible. **
* They’ve also got barks which are smooth, for the water to reach easily down to the roots.
Describe Liana Vines and their adaptations.
These are woody vines which climb up the trees upto the canopy layer, to absorb the most sunlight. They’ve got thorns and spines, which provide them essential support to be attached to the trees.
Their leaves and flowers grow in the Canopy layer.
Describe Sloth adaptations.
Sloths are animals which use camouflage that helps them to blend in the rainforest canopy, and move very slowly to make it difficult for predators.
Flying frog adaptations
A flying frog has got:
* Webbed arms and feet, allowing it to stretch easily.
* Loose skin too
* Has round-toe pads in the feet that help it climb and cling on the branches.
Spider Monkey adaptations?
A spider monkey has got:
* Long tail to swing from branches to branches
* Long, strong limbs to climb through the rainforest trees.
Toucan adaptations
- A toucan has long and large beak, which allows it to cut the fruits from branches of trees.
- Have colorful feathers allowing it to blend in the rainforest
- Have sharp claws allowing it to grip on to the branches.
Jaguar adaptations
A jaguar has black fur, and it camouflages in the darkness of forest floor to sneak up to its prey.
