Biomes Flashcards
To know about the features of different biomes.
Explain what is a biome.
A biome is a region of Earth classified by its climate, vegetation, and the species living there.
What is a Tundra?
A tundra is a vast, flat and treeless Arctic region with extremely cold conditions.
What is a Coniferous forest?
A coniferous forest is a biome with tall cone-bearing evergreen trees, (e.g. pines) able to cope with harsh winters.
What is a temperate deciduous forest?
A biome which has great variety of plant species, and goes through 4 seasons where the trees change colour in autumn and lose them to retain moisture in winter.
What is a temperate grassland?
A temperate grassland is a biome with grasses and shrubs dominating trees, and they generally do not have any trees in them. They have hot summers and cold winters, with some amount of rainfall.
What is a mountain?
A mountainous region is a high altitude rocky environment, with very harsh winters.
What is a desert?
A desert is a biome with very few plants and animals, which are adapted to dry and extreme conditions or climate.
Explain Tropical Rainforest.
Tropical Rainforests are biomes with lush (abundant) vegetation, huge biodiversity with hot and humid climate, and located near the Equator. They usually have huge amount of rainfall anually.
Explain Tropical grasslands (Savannah)
Tropical grasslands are biomes with dry and wet conditions, grazed by animals and stalked by predators. They have more rainfall annually than the temperate ones, and also warm throughout the year.
What are polar ice sheets?
A polar ice sheet is a biome with high latitude region of the planet covered with ice.
What are the differences between a tropical grassland and Temperate grassland?
A temperate grassland is usually located near colder regions, smaller rainfall and with cold winters and hot summers.
A tropical grassland (Savannah) is usually located near warmer regions, higher amount of rainfall with dry and wet seasons.
