Plant Anatomy Flashcards
What are the main organs of a plant?
Roots, stem, leaves, and flowers
What is the function of roots?
Absorb water and nutrients, anchor the plant.
What does the stem do?
Supports the plant, transports water and nutrients, stores food
What is photosynthesis, and where does it happen?
The process of making food using sunlight; happens in the leaves.
What are the two types of vascular tissue?
Xylem (transports water) and phloem (transports food).
What is the outer protective layer of a plant called?
Dermal tissue.
What is the function of flowers?
Reproduction; they produce seeds through pollination.
What are stomata, and where are they found?
Tiny openings on leaves that allow gas exchange.
What is the function of xylem?
Transports water and minerals from roots to the rest of the plant.
What is the function of phloem?
Transports food (sugars) made in the leaves to other parts of the plant.
What type of ground tissue carries out photosynthesis?
Parenchyma
What part of the plant anchors it in the soil?.
Roots
What is meristematic tissue?
The tissue responsible for plant growth (found in root and shoot tips).
What is the function of the cuticle on leaves?.
A waxy layer that prevents water loss
