Planning & Placement of Implants Flashcards
what is osseointegration?
direct functional & structural connection between load bearing implant & bone
what are the 2 stages of osseointegration?
primary osseointegration:
implant anchored in bone due to frictional forces provided between bone & implant design features
secondary osseointegration:
process of functional connection between bone & dental implant. Living bone grows onto surface of implant
Tooth V Implant
types of materials that can be used for dental implants?
- Titanium
- Titanium Zirconium (stronger than Ti)
- Ceramic implant
does the implant design have an effect on survival/success on it?
tapered or parallel has no significant effect on success
purpose of a dental implant?
- replace missing teeth
- primary aims of dental implant tx (aesthetic, functional concerns)
implant good for MISSING TEETH not a good replacement for a natural tooth
how does smoking affect implants?
- increased risk of failure
- increased risk of peri-implantitis
affects:
- vascularity
- fibroblast/osteoblast function
does age matter with implant placement?
- all implants should be placed after cessation of growth
what impact does smile line have on implants?
- will impact on visibility of implant & prosthesis
- peri-implant soft tissue is the hardest area to mask
what are relevant local anatomy for implant placement in the maxilla?
- maxillary sinus
- nasal floor
- nasopalatine canal
- infra-orbital nerve
what are relevant local anatomy for implant placement in the mandible?
- Inferior alveolar canal
- mental foramen
- incisive canal
- lingual perforating vessels
- submandibular fossa
what is the minimum amount of distance an implant needs from an adjacent tooth?
1.5mm MINIMUM (either side)
