PLANNING ON MAIN ROADS Flashcards
What do you do when you have a broken cycle lane?
You try and avoid it as much as possible but if there’s oncoming cars you will have to check your left mirror and if it is safe then we can move into it just enough so that they can get past and then when there’s no more oncoming traffic you can check your right mirror and pull back out
What do you do in situations where you may need to go slower?
Cover your breaks and clutch
What do you generally need to be doing
Tucking in and out of the left depending on space and oncoming traffic , when you do this you need to be checking your central and side mirrors
Scan crossings
Scan what’s happening up ahead
Try to get up to the speed limit if it is safe to do so
Which lane do we pick when we are going straight ahead?
Usually we stick to the left lane to go straight ahead unless there’s signs or road markings which indicate that lane is left only
If one lane splits into 2, do you need a signal?
No, you stick to the left generally and all you need to do is check your mirrors and move in
What if you see red lights up ahead?
Start braking gently 10 car lengths away and hope that they’ll change before you need to stop
Maybe take the gear down
Clutch down 7 car lengths away
Make sure you keep any junctions clear if you’re stopping
If you’re stopping, get into first gear and stop in a sensible place
What do you do if you see a dashed parking area to the left?
You can drive through it
