Planning for Bridges Flashcards
Definition of bridge?
Bridge is a tooth-borne indirect fixed prosthesis which is used for the replacement of one or more missing teeth
Indication for bridge?
Missing teeth and restoration of edentulous area
What are the types of bridges?
Fixed-fixed Fixed-movable Cantilever - abatement one side Resin-bonded - Pontic w/ wings Implant retained (if 2 implant = fixed-fixed implant, if 1 = cantilever implant)
How to plan for bridge?
- Hx and examination
- Critical thinking and decision making
- Detailed planning of bridge
What are the possible tx options for partially edentulous pt?
- No prosthesis - compromise function/aesthetic (risk tilting/ over eruption adjacent teeth)
- RPDs - conservative but removable
- Conventional tooth supported FPD
- Resin-bonded bridge
- Implant supported
Adv and disadv of conventional FPDs?
Adv: longevity, fixed and predictable
Disadv: invasive and irreversible, loss enamel
Adv and disadv of resin-bonded?
Adv: conservatieve
Disadv: risk debond, shortened longevity
Adv and disadv of implant-supported?
Cost, bone quality
Independent adjacent teeth
What to include in clinical examination when planning bridge?
Length of span
Occlusion
Shape ridge - affect shape Pontic
How to assess the abutment tooth?
Periodontal and periodical assessment
Root configuration
Crown: root ratio
Radiographic assessment
What is optimum crown:root ratio
2:3
Minimum 1:1
What root configuration are ideal for short-span bridges?
Conical roots
Can the final appearance be predicted?
Use of study models and diagnostic wax-up
Intra-oral: temporary RPDs
Provisional lab made bridge- allow modification aesthetic and occlusion
What should pt be informed about?
Current conditions Extent of dental tx proposed Time and cost Level of home care Level maintenance inc. repair/ replacement
