Composite - Advanced Use Flashcards
What is composite made from?
Methacrylate resin - bisGMA
Filler - silica
Photoinitiator
What are advanced uses of dental composite?
Polychromatic confirmative restoration Altering morphology Occlusal rehabilitation Repair failed composite/ ceramic Tooth splinting
Idea properties of composite?
Colour match High polish ability and durable finish High wear resistance Low shrinkage Radiopacity Compatible with bonding agents Range handling characteristics
What is composite selection based on?
Colour Filler composition Physical properties Handling characteristics Cost
What are the different classifications by filler?
- Macrofilled
- Micro-filled
- Continuum filled
- Nanofilled
Why are dual opacity composites used?
Range of dentine and enamel matched shades
Low cost introduction to technique
Example of dual opacity composite?
Ceram.X duo
What are some problems with layered composite kits?
Complex and costly kits
Intensive and translucent shades
Training required for best result
Special instruments needed
What is Filtek Supreme XT?
Has four opacities: dentine, body, incisor, enamel
Mechanical properties of hybrid composite
Outstanding polish ability w/ good retention of surface finish
Excellent handling
Good wear resistance
What is enamel plus HFO?
Has dentine and enamel base shades - diff intensives and opalescent shades
Slump handling
Steep learning curve - training and practice needed
When would you use layered build technique?
Anterior build up
Tooth prep then build palatal wall with index
What is the Vanini shade method?
- Base chroma = dentine shade
- Value = enamel shade
- Intensives
- Opalescents (translucencies)
- Characteristics (halo, cracks, banding)
What different finishing systems are available?
Fine diamond and TC finishing
Polishing disc
Smoothing and high gloss
Can composite-composite repairs be carried out?
Bond strength dependent on adhesive and structure of aged composite
Viable option for small fracture and margin failures in large restorations
Can ceramic be repaired?
Heterogenous ceramic (leucite/ feldspathic) can be HF acid etched - reliable high strength bond w/ silence coping agent and appropriate resin
Low fusing homogenous ceramics (alumina, zirconia) can’t be bonded
If in doubt use CoJet silicoating and silane
