Planning And Production Flashcards
What are the three main production methods?
One off
Batch
Mass
Properties of One-Off?
Every product is unique
Labour intensive
Highly skilled workers
Properties of Batch?
Groups of products
Skilled workers
Flexible factory/workshop
Properties of Mass?
Automated production
Low skill workers
Expensive set up costs
CAD/CAM advantages?
Don’t have to be on same site
Efficient so fewer staff required
Run simulations on CAD models
CAD/CAM disadvantages?
Very expensive to set up
Staff need to be trained
Reduces number of skilled workers in society
What’s a Jig?
A device which hold or guide a tool
(Improves accuracy and repeatability)
What’s a fixture?
A device which holds a part in place so it can be worked on
(Improves accuracy and repeatability)
Advantages of Standard Components to the manufacture?
Can be manufactured in large quantities
Can focus on their Owen products rather than designing every component
Sourced easily
Disadvantages of Standard components to the manufacturer?
May restrict design somewhat
Manufacturer must deal with third party supplier
Delivery problems/ Quality problems
Advantages of JIT production?
No stock is held saving money
Waiting and delivery times are shortened
Disadvantages of JIT production?
Can’t adapt to sudden increase in orders
Manufacturer become dependent on supplies
