planned obsolescence Flashcards
What is planned obsolescence?
Planned obsolescence is a strategy used in the design of products to give the product a specific lifespan to cause the product to be perceived as obsolete before it actually needs to be replaced.
What is style obsolescence?
Products that are designed to be fashionable on their release are likely to fall out of fashion within the next few years.
When a product is no longer desirable because it has gone out of the popular fashion, its style is obsolete.
Products such as clothing and electronic goods are more susceptible to this form of obsolescence than others. Designers try to anticipate how long it will take for a product to be become unfashionable.
What is product evolution?
The increasing rate of technology developments has resulted in a steady stream of newer models and product upgrades. For example consumers have become accustomed to upgrading their phone every two years. Newer models are frequently introduced – think about it, how many times have we purchased a product just because it is the latest version despite not having a need for it?
What is ease of maintenance?
The lifespan of any product is influenced by how easy it is to maintain. Think about razors for example, disposable and more expensive ones with replaceable heads. The more expensive razor will last longer. Some phone manufacturers now make batteries harder to replace this makes the user more likely to purchase a new one,
