Planets Flashcards
1
Q
Rock Planets:
A
- Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
- Called rock, inner, and terrestrial planets
- Made up of rock, have metallic materials, have solid crust
- Planets have different sizes, surfaces, and atmospheres
2
Q
Mercury:
A
- Smallest planet
- Closets planet to the sun
- No atmosphere
- Mass is so small it can’t create or have an atmosphere
- Has many craters
- Core, mantle, crust
3
Q
Venus:
A
- Second planet from the sun
- Same size as earth
- Rotates east to west
- Rotates slowly 1 day longer then 1 year
- 97% carbon dioxide (Pressure is 90x greater then earth)
- Average temp is 460 degrees Celsius (Hottest Planet)
- Internally like earth
4
Q
Earth:
A
- Living planet that can support major animals and plants
- “Third Rock from the sun”
- Atmosphere performs multi-tasks
- Absorbs uv rays
- Destroys most meteors
- Produces green house effect
- This allows presence of water
- Moderate temps support varieties of life
5
Q
Sun:
A
- Brightest star in the sky
- Greek Word meaning “wanderer”
- Planets seem to wander around the sky
- Planet and sun make up solar system
- Largest object in the solar system
- Diameter is 10x the sixpence of largest planet, Jupiter
- Mostly made up of hydrogen gas
- Makes up about 99% of solar system mass
- Uses nuclear fusion that creates large amounts of energy
- Gravitational pull keeps planets in orbit
6
Q
Mars:
A
- 4th planet from the sun
- 2 irregular shaped moon
- No water, very little to support life
- Reddish color because of soil
- Has large amount of iron oxide, commonly called rust
- Winds produce dust storms that last for months
7
Q
The outer planets:
A
- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
- “Gas Planets” because primary made of H and He
- Strong gravitation pull due to large mass
- Have a thick gas and liquid layer covering small core
8
Q
Jupiter:
A
- Largest planet
- 1,000 earth’s could fit in Jupiter
- Has the most moon’s with 63
- Jupiter is a ball of helium and hydrogen
- 11 years and 10 months equals one revolution
- 5th planet from the sun
9
Q
Saturn:
A
- Ball of Helium and Hydrogen
- 7 rings mostly made of dust and ice particles
- 6th planet from the sun
- Next largest amount of moon’s
- Largest moon, Titan, is larger then the smallest planet Mercury
10
Q
Uranus:
A
- 20 year seasons
- One of the coldest planets average temperature -357 degrees
- One revolution 84 years
- 27 moons
- 13 rings
- 7th planet from the sun
11
Q
Neptune:
A
- 8th planet from the sun
- Discovered just recently in science terms in 1846
- Rotation is complete in 16 hours
12
Q
Pluto:
A
- Classified as dwarf planet in 2006
- Discovered by KS farmer in 1930 with a telescope made of implement parts
- Only 1,400 miles wide
- 1 day = 6.5 days in earth
- 248 years for revolution
- 100 lbs person would weigh 7 lbs on Pluto
- Very cold temperature -400 F
- Takes 8 hours for sun’s rays to reach the surface
