4
Q

What causes global climate change?

A

It is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels that release dioxide and alternative greenhouse gases into the air (Water vapor, Carbon dioxide, Methane, Ozone, Nitrous oxide, Chlorofluorocarbons). These gases trap heat inside the atmosphere, which may have a variety of effects on ecosystems.

Q

What are the effects of Climate Change?

A
  • rising ocean levels
  • severe weather events
  • droughts that render landscapes additional vulnerable to wildfires

7
Q

What are the six ways climate change will affect PH cities (according to Ranada, 2014)?

A
  • More intense El Niño
  • Sea surface temperatures to rise
  • Tropical cyclones to intensify
  • Sea levels to rise by 4-6 meters
  • Rainfall, river flow, and flooding to intensify

10
Q

What is an effect of the rising of sea surface temperature?

A

This can lead to more powerful storms because storms get their strength from heat rising from the sea.

11
Q

What is the effect of the shift in the pH levels of our oceans?

A
  • Widespread coral reef death
  • Shrimps are not able to develop skins
  • oyster cannot develop shells
  • fish larvae may not be able to develop bones
(further endangering food security and the livelihood of fisherman)

12
Q

What is the reason for the rising sea levels by 4 to 6 meters?

A

Scientists say this is due to the melting of ice sheets in northern portions of the globe like Antarctica and Greenland.

Q

What is an effect of sea level rise to the Philippines?

A

This can submerge low-lying communities like Tacloban City which stands 3 meters above sea level
