Planet Earth: Sedimentry Rocks Flashcards
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
Rock breaks down into small grains.
Mud and sand are moved by wind and water.
Mud, dust and sand are deposited in low lying areas.
New layers of mud and sand are deposited on top of existing layers.
The layers become compacted and hardened and form sedimentary rock.
What is a sedimentary rock?
Rock that forms when sediments are deposited in layers and harden.
What is limestone made from?
Shells, and bones of tiny sea animals.
Name three types of sedimentary rocks:
Shale
Sandstone
Limestone
What is shale made from?
Made from mud layers of the years.
What is sandstone made from?
Grains of sand in layers over years.
What does sedimentary rocks always have?
Layers.
What can we use limestone for?
Cement.
What can we use shale and sandstone be used for?
Building blocks, paving and wall tiles.
