Why do we use planes of motion?
To describe the movement, position or location of various body segments in relation to exercise
What are the three planes of motion?
Sagittal, frontal and transverse
Describe the sagittal plane
It divides the body into left and right halves.
It’s as if you are walking down a hallway.
Can only move fowards, backwards, up and down
Describe the frontal plane
Divides the body into front and back halves
It’s as if you have a wall directly in front of you and behind you
You can’t move forward or back, only left, right, up and down
Describe the transverse plane (aka horizontal plane)
Splits body into top and bottom halves
Movements performed involve rotational movements, or limb movements parallel to the horizon
