Planes and Axis Flashcards
(34 cards)
What’s the Anatomical position? 4 points
- Body in an upright position
- Eyes looking forward facing the observer
- Arms by the side with the palms of the hands facing forward
- Feet flat on the ground toes directed forward
What are the 3 main planes of movement?
Transverse, frontal and sagittal
Frontal plane
front and back, (anterior and posterior) also called the coronal plane
Transverse plane
upper and lower (superior and inferior) also called the horizontal plane
sagittal plane
equal left and right sides
midsagittal plane
A vertical cut down the exact center line of the specimen that separates the left half from the right half.
parasagittal plane
A vertical cut that is off-center that separates the left of the specimen from the right in unequal portions.
oblique plane
An oblique plane in the anatomical position describes any plane that is not in any of the coronal, sagittal, median or horizontal planes.
X axis/ frontal (medio-lateral)
passes from side to side
Z axis/ sagittal (Anterior-Posterior)
passes from front to back
Y axis/ longitudinal (Superior/Inferior)
passes from top to bottom
movement at x axis
Flexion and Extension
movement at Z axis
Abduction and Adduction
movement at Y axis
Rotational/Twist, Axial Rotation and Rotation of extremities
X axis/ frontal goes with which plane?
Sagittal plane
Z axis/ sagittal goes with which plane?
Frontal plane
Y axis/ longitudinal goes with which plane?
Transverse plane
Movement Example for: Z axis, Frontal plane
Cartwheel
Movement Example for: X axis, sagittal plane
somersault
Movement Example for: Y axis, transverse
Pirouette
medial
midline eg sternum
lateral
away from the midline of the body eg head of the humerus
inferior
bottom eg feet
superior
top eg head
