muscle structure and function Flashcards
what are the properties of muscle?
excitablility, contractibility, extensibility, elasticity
Excitability
is the property that muscles can be activated by stimulation.
contractibility
When the muscle is stimulated cross-brides between actin and myosin in the sarcomeres produce force in the direction of shortening the muscle
extensibility
Simply, muscle cells can stretch.
elasticity
When you extend/stretch a muscle it stores elastic energy that is recovered when the muscle and tendon is released, and it returns to original length. Like flicking an elastic band.
muscle shortens =
concentric contraction
muscle lengthens =
eccentric contraction
muscle remains constant length =
isometric contraction
muscle with more force=
muscle lengthened
muscle with less force=
shorter
