planes and axes Flashcards
describe the coronal plane
also known as the frontal plane it divides the body to ventral and dorsal
describe the sagittal plane
Divides the body left and right. Its perpendicular to the frontal and makes a 90 degree angle
describe the transverse plane
also known as the horizontal plane it divides the body to proximal and distal and cranial and caudal
what is the location terminology for the frontal/coronal plane
cranial/caudal, medial/lateral and not ventral and dorsal
what is the location terminology for the sagittal plane
cranial/caudal, ventral/dorsal and not medial and not medial and lateral
what is the location terminology for the transverse/ horizontal plane
ventral/dorsal, medial/ lateral and not cranial and caudal
what are other names for the frontal axes
ML axis, Transverse axis
describe the location of the sagittal axis
it crosses between the sagittal plane and is perpendicular to the frontal plane
describe the location of the vertical/longitudinal axis
is perpendicular to the transverse plane
what are the movements that happen on the sagittal plane on the transverse/frontal axis
flexion , extension, dorsiflexion, plantarflexion (ankle) dorsiflexion, palmar flexion (wrist/hand) protraction, retraction
what are the movements that happen on the frontal plane on the sagittal axis
abduction. adduction, lateral flexion(spine)
what are the movements that happen on the transverse plane on the longitudinal/vertical axis
internal, external rotation (spine), pronation, supination (elbow)
