A

Diseases like cholera and smallpox had killed many
Trade goods - Their enemies had guns

Why was the tipi ideal or the Indians life on the plains?

A

Children were safe and secure, enough space for elderly,

Easy to move, women were allowed to decorate it, easy to clean, kept you warm and cool.

How was Indian life organised?

A

Sioux Nation - never led by one individual, consists of many tribes
Tribes - led by chiefs of bands and advised by councillors, consists of many bands
Each band, is led by chief, is advised by a council of men and is influenced by a warrior society

A

Ceremonial buffalo dance, or dressed as wolves and shot the buffalo with arrow. Or stampeed of a cliff

dung - was used for fuel and smoked in ceremonies
tails - fly swats, ornaments, whips
Fur - Decoration on clothes, stuffing for saddles and pillows, mittens and rope
Flesh - cooked, dried and mixed with fat and wild cherries for pemmican

A

tanned hide= bags, bedding, blankets, boots, drums, dresses, saddles, tipi covers etc.
Raw hide = containers, shields, string and lashings
Bladder = Food bags
Intestines = buckets and cooking vessels

heart = either eaten as a delicacy or left I hunting ground to show respect towards buffalos
Gall = used to make paint
Bones = arrow heads, dice, jewellery, knives, needles etc.
Fat = cooking, soap and hair grease

How important was religion to the Sioux? ( spirits,circles, sacred land, visions and ceremonies)

A

spirits = everything had a spirit whether you’re alive or not
circles = circle of nature, cycle - seasons
Sacred land = high land, black hills - they would return to the land once they were dead
visions = contact spirit world you need a vision, not eating, saunas/sweat lodge, given nickname
Ceremonies = hang from frame pole through chest

A

Bow and arrow quiver, Lance, Shield, Rifle, and horse

Why were casualties so low?

A

Use of Coup stick - seen as brave to touch enemy than kill him. 1835-1845, 4 warriors lost, 88 Sioux died, 44 were women and children

A

currency, they were fought for, showed skill of warrior when hunting
