Jordan River
At the end of their Wilderness Journey, after Joshua succeeded Moses as the leader of the people, the Israelites entered the Promised Land by crossing the Jordan River that, like the Red Sea.
Jericho
A city of Benjamin, the first city in Canaan taken by Joshua as God told the Israelites to march around their walls seven times and after doing so the walls were completely destroyed.
Ai
Second Canaanite city taken by Israel, it is where Joshua was defeated due to Achan’s sin and after dealing with the sin they defeated Ai.
Shiloh
Joshua assembled the people to make the second distribution of the Land of Promise and here the tabernacle of the Lord was set up. The ark and the tabernacle continued at Shiloh until it was taken by the Philistines.
Cities of Refuge
A safe place to flee for a person who had accidentally killed another as it provided asylum to the fugitive by sheltering and protecting him until a trial could be held to determine his guilt or innocence. If, in the judgment of the city elders, the death had occurred accidentally and without intent, the man was allowed to stay there without fear of harm or revenge by the dead man’s relatives. Moses was commanded to establish six cities of refuge from the total of 48 given to the Levites.
Bokim
The place where the angel of God announced judgment on Israel at beginning of the period of Judges because they had not destroyed pagan altars but had made covenant treaties with the native inhabitants. The people cried and named the place Bokim, which means “weepers”.
Jabesh Gilead
Tribe of Israel that refused to come up to Mizpeh to take part with Israel against the tribe of Benjamin. An expedition was sent against Jabesh Gilead where all inhabitants were put to the sword except four hundred virgins, which were given to the Benjamites.
Ramah
The home of Elkanah, Samuel’s father, and the birthplace and burial place of Samuel himself.
Nob
A city of priests in Benjamin where its inhabitants were put to the sword by the command of Saul for their hospitality to David.
Gath
Philistine city that still remained to be conquered at the end of Joshua’s life. In a war against Israel the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant and stored it briefly in Gath but the Ark caused plagues of sickness and rodents and the Philistines sent it back. Gath is remembered mostly for being the birthplace of the giant Goliath.
Hebron
King David’s first capital city of Judah and it is the city where David was anointed as King of all Israel.
Jerusalem
David conquered this city from the Jebusites and called it the city of David, also called Zion. This is the city where David brought the Ark of the God.
Mount Carmel
Elijah called on Ahab to assemble the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah on Mount Carmel and challenged them to call down fire from Baal to light a sacrifice but they couldn’t do it. God brought down fire for Elijah and then he seized the prophets of Baal and took them to Kishon Valley and slaughtered them.
Mount Horeb
Known as the mountain of God. This is where Elijah went to spend the night and after an earthquake and a fire, God comes to him through a gentle whisper.
