A

Joshua son of Nun sent two spies to secretly assess the city of Jericho. The spies are spotted by men of Jericho and pursued, however they are hidden by a woman named Rahab. Because of this courageous act these men make an oath to her to spare her and her family’s lives when they attack Jericho.

Joshua & Israelites crossing the Jordan

A

Joshua prepares the Israelites to cross the Jordan by sending priests with the Ark of the Covenant to go ahead of them. God promises Joshua that He will make his leadership clear to the Israelites by performing a great miracle through him and that he does as the streams of the river stopped as soon as their feet touched the water.

The Angel of the Lord giving Joshua the Jericho Battle Plan

A

After the Israelites crossed the Jordan River Joshua confronts an angel reffered to as a commander of the army of the Lord. This angel instructs Joshua to have his soldiers and priests march around the wall seven times so that the walls can collapse.

A

When the Israelites attacked Ai the first time, they were defeated due to Achan’s hidden sin. After dealing with Achan by stoning him and burning the stolen possessions they attacked Ai again and defeated them!

A

Joshua dedicates an altar to the Lord as Moses instructed him to and he burns sacrifices on it. With stone tablets Joshua writes a copy of the law of the Lord and reads the blessings and curses to the Israelites.

A

Upon Joshua’s prayers, God stilled the sun for about a full day until Israel’s enemies, the Amorites, were defeated.

A

Joshua summons the leaders of all Israel after settling in the Promised Land and calls them to throw away the foreign gods and to be totally committed to the Lord. Joshua’s heart was that whether they choose to worship God or not him and his household would remain faithful!

Gideon belonged to the tribe of Manasseh, the weakest of all the tribes of Israel and the weakest of his family. However, God chose him to deliver the Israelites from the oppression of the Midianites and after doubting and receiving signs from God he fought and defeated the Midianites.

The test: Shibboleth or Sibboleth?

A

The Ephraimites attempted to lie about being from Ephraim so Japhthah established a test in which the Ephramites would have to say “Shibboleth” since they could not pronounce it if they would say “Sibboleth” that would reveal their nationality and they would be killed.

Samson’s vengeance on the Philistines

A

When Samson returned from his father’s house to visit his Philistine wife her father refused to let him see her because he had given her away to Samson’s companion. Samson burned with anger and used foxes to set fire to the Philistine grain fields. The Philistines learned that Samson’s father-in-law and wife were the center of the conflict so they burned both of them. Samson was captured and tied up with ropes but he broke free and killed a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey.

How the city of Dan came to be

A

The Danites were seeking a place of their own where they might settle because they had not yet come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. Five men who were sent out as spies went inside Micah’s house and took the idol he made and his priest. The Danites then attacked and burned down their city and then changed the name from Laish to the city of Dan.

A

A Levite’s concubine was raped in the city of Gibeah by the Benjamites and the Levite cuts up his concubine into twelve pieces and sends each of the tribes a piece and in return the Israelites punish the Benjamites.

Wives for the Benjamites

A

The Israelite tribes made an oath not to marry any of their daughters to a Benjamite but later this grieved the Israelites as this meant one tribe would be cut off from Israel. They attacked their own people of Jabesh Gilead for their refusal to assemble with the rest of Israel and captured 400 of their virgins to be wives for the Benjamites so the tribe won’t be wiped out.

The Philistines capture the ark

A

When the Israelites were defeated by the Philistines the elders respond with a superstitious trust in the Ark of the Covenant. They gathered the Ark and brought it into their next battle against the Philistines. The Lord was displeased with the Israelites, so again he gave them into the hands of the Philistines and this time the Ark was captured.

A

The elders of Israel asked Samuel to appoint a king since his two sons were wicked but Samuel warned them about the consequences and yet they insisted so the Lord told Samuel to give them a king.

A

Saul gathered the Israelites and defeated the Ammonites who were attacking Jabesh Gilead. The people were fired up and made Saul king at Gilgal.

The anointing of David

A

After Saul’s rejection, the prophet Samuel visits Jesse to select the new King for Israel. Samuel surveys the eldest sons of Jesse and presumes God has chosen one of them because of their impressive physique, but God rejects them. God explains to Samuel that He is looking for a man with a righteous heart and that was the youngest son, a shepherd boy named David.

A

Saul gave David a high rank over the army but became jealous when the women sang how David had killed tens of thousands while Saul killed only thousands. From then on Saul set out to kill David.

A

David had the opportunity to kill Saul several times but spares his life. Jonathan warned David about Saul and so he escaped and fled to Samuel.

An Amalekite man came and told David that he had killed Saul upon his request and that Jonathan was dead. David called one of his men to strike him down and then he took up a lament concerning Saul and Jonathan.

A

Abner is killed by Joab as vengeance for killing his brother Asahel.

Nathan’s rebuke

A

Nathan speaks a parable to David about a rich man stealing the only precious lamb of a poor man to feed his hungry dinner guest. David, upon hearing this parable, condemns the rich man for his greedy treachery and Nathan then reveals that he represented the rich man by taking Uriah’s one wife when he had many.

Absalom’s death

A

Absalom eventually marched out against his father in battle. David’s army, under the command of Joab, routed Absalom and his troops. During retreat through the forest Absalom’s long hair was caught in the branches of a tree leaving him there suspended till Joab came and killed him, against the order of David to keep the young man, his son, alive. When the tidings of Absalom’s death were brought to David he mourned and in turn the whole army mourned.

How the Gibeonites were avenged by David

A

Soon after the death of Absalom Israel was visited by a famine as a punishment for Saul’s genocide of the Gibeonites. The Gibeonites demanded they be given seven male descendants to be killed and David did as they requested.

The three mighty men get water for David

A

David voiced his home-sick desire to drink water from the wells of his nativity in Bethlehem. Three of David’s mighty men snuck through the lines of the Philistines and brought him the water from Bethlehem for which he longed for. In honor of their heroism David refused to drink the water and instead, David immortalized the courage and loyalty of these three men by pouring out the water.

A

David measures his humanistic and worldly power by sinfully taking a census. Joab tried to stop him but David insisted and in turn a plague was sent from God that killed 70,000 of the people.

A

David calls Solomon to settle all the accounts of the previous reign so that he can begin to reign with a clean slate. Joab and Shimei were put to death and Barzillai’s children were added to his courts and cared for in repayment.

A

The first prominent scene in Solomon’s reign where God offers Solomon whatever he wishes. He chose wisdom in preference to riches, honor, or long life and therefore God made him the wisest man on the earth.

The two prostitutes and one baby

A

Two prostitutes that live in the same house had one of their kids die in the middle of the night and they were arguing whose baby died and whose is still alive. Solomon using his wisdom orders that the baby be cut in two and that is how he finds out that the baby belongs to the mother that wanted to keep him alive versus the one that agreed to cut him in half.

A

Solomon finished building the temple that God had promised to David. It took him seven years to build the temple and 13 years to build his palace.

The influence of Solomon’s 700 wives & 300 concubines

A

Solomon married foreign women even after God had told the Israelites that they should not intermarry. His 700 wives and 300 concubines led him astray to worship and even build altars for false gods. God became angry with Solomon and punishes him with the promise of tearing the kingdom away from him.

The elders and young men’s advice to Rehoboam

A

Rehoboam was told by the people to lighten the harsh labor and after rejecting the elder’s advice to do so he listened to the advice of his childhood friends to make the labor even harsher. In return the people stoned Adoniram who was in charge of the forced labor and rebelled against Rehoboam.

Elijah taken to heaven

A

Elijah and Elisha were on their way to Gilgal when Elisha finds out from Elijah that God was about to take him to heaven. Elisha asks for a double portion of his spirit and Elijah gives it to him and immediately afterwards chariots and horses of fire come and he is taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.

A

Elisha was going up to Bethel and as he was walking some boys jeered at him to love. After the boys called him “baldy” he called down curses in the name of God and 2 bears came out of the words and mauled forty-two of the boys.

Naaman and his leprosy

A

Naaman, a gentile commander of the king Aram, goes to Elisha to be healed of his leprosy. He becomes angry after Elisha tells him to dip himself seven times in the Jordan River but his servants advise him to do so and so he does and he is healed of his leprosy.

Elisha blinds the Arameans

A

The Arameans surround Elisha and his servant to try and capture them but Elisha calls on God to blind them. After being struck with blindness, Elisha leads them to the city and has their eyes opened, throws them a great feast, and then sends them back home.

A

After removing the altars that caused Israel to sin and slaughtering all the priest of those high places King Josiah ordered to celebrate the Passover like one never seen before.

The destruction of Jerusalem

A

The Babylonian army set fire to the temple of Jerusalem, broke down the walls, carried off the valuables, and then carried into exile the people who remained in the city.
