What is Placenta Previa?
What is the greatest danger with this condition?
Placenta previa is the implentation of the placenta in the lower third of the uterus.
This condition places a woman @ great risk of POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE!
Why does placenta previa occur/What are the risk factors?
- Uterine scarring
- Large placentas
- High altitudes
- Fibroids
- Smoking
- AMA
- Previous h(x) of placenta previa
A Placenta Previa is characterized with what condiitons?
- painless bright red bleeding after 20 weeks
- Fundal ht often greater than expected for gest. age
-Typically characterized by painless bright red vaginal bleeding during the second or third
trimester
- Abdominal examination usually reveals a soft, relaxed, non-tender uterus with normal tone
How and when is placenta previa diagnosed?
Ultrasound. After 20 weeks gestation.
What are the conditions for a mother to be placed in expectant care for Placenta Previa?
What interventions will be done?
fetus is at less than 36 weeks of gestation and has a normal FHR tracing, the bleeding is mild and stops, and the woman is not in labor
