Placenta Structure + Function Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 parts of the placenta?
A
- fetal - develops from chorionic sac = villous chorion
- maternal - derived from endometrium = decidua basalis
2
Q
What are the functions of the placenta?
A
PNREH
- Protection
- Nourishment
- Respiration
- Excretion
- Hormone Production
3
Q
What are the 3 parts of the decidua?
A
- Basalis - lies just under embryo and contributes to placenta
- Capsularis - surrounds embryo
- Parietalis - surrounds outer layer on other side of uterine cavity from capsularis
4
Q
What is the decidual reaction and what causes it?
A
changes in endometrium induced by progesterone every uterine cycle but especially pronounced in implantation
- stromal cells swell via accumulation of glycogen etc.
5
Q
How does placental circulation look?
A
6
Q
What happens to the chorionic villi as the placenta develops?
A
- **smooth chorion - **under decidua capsularis, they degenerate
- villous chorion - under basalis, they proliferate
7
Q
What is the layer just between the intervillous space and decidua basalis?
A
cytotrophoblast shell
