corresponds with prescribed regimen from health provider
What is adherance?
Extent to which patient’s medication taking and health behaviour
corresponds with agreed recommendation from health provider
When does non-adherance occur?
Non-adherence is problematic in most
chronic diseases, not related to any one persons and has many causes + solutions
What creates un-intentional non-adherance?
Capacity and resource issues
Practical barriers
*Forgetting
*Poor understanding
*Complex medicine regimen
*Planning problems
*Financial barriers
*Accessibility barriers
*Physical barriers e.g. poor eyesight
What creates intentional non-adherance?
- Motivation
- Beliefs and behaviours
- Perceptual barriers
*To see if my illness is still there
*To see if I really need the medication
*To give my body a rest from the medication
*Because my body is sensitive to the effects of medication
*I worry about becoming dependent on the medication
*I want to lead a normal life again
*I don’t think the treatment is worth it
*It reminds me I have an illness
