Highlights the deprivation that is faced by people living in the Mumbai slums and the lack of essentials of survival

Mirrors the structure of the houses in the slums and the fact that they are of uneven length and there is a lack of regularity
LIVING SPACE- enjambment (lines run into each other); uneven length lines
Sense of tension and unease is felt due to the uneven lines and sense of being on the edge

Double entendre- nails could signify the facts that houses are basically falling apart; likewise, they could be nails on hands, clutching onto whatever is left in desperation

The short stanza depicts the fact they have to squish to fit. ‘Living space’ indicates that it’s not homely and is solely a place to survive
