What is meant by the term ‘placelessness’?
the idea that a place is lacking any unique identity so it feels as if you could be anywhere
What is meant by the term ‘sense of place’?
The subjective emotional attachment a person has to a place
What is meant by the term ‘insider’?
a person who has significant experience of a place (e.g, resident, commuter etc.)
What is meant by the term ‘outsider’?
a person who has limited experience of a place, may lack a sense of belonging (e.g tourist)
What is meant by the term ‘lived experience’?
a person’s individual experience of a place (can be from insiders or outsiders)
What factors can influence the character of a place?
- demography
- industry (primary, secondary, etc. )
- physical geography (harbours, beaches etc.)
- topography
- infrastructure
- land use
- location
- leisure and facilities
What is meant by the term ‘globalisation’?
the process by which the world is becoming increasingly interconnected as a result of massively increased trade and cultural exchange
What is meant by the term ‘gentrification’?
a change in the land/infrastructure which leads to an increase in land and property values, forcing out the lower classes
What is meant by the term ‘glocalisation’?
large TNCs adapting their products or services to better suit the people within a specific location
What is meant by the term ‘media place’?
a place’s identity based off of it’s media representation and not an actual visit to the place.
What is meant by the term ‘place character’?
specific attributes or features which contribute to the identity of a place (making it unique)
What is meant by the term ‘exogenous factors’?
factors that contribute to a place’s character that originate from outside of the place or provide links with other places
What is meant by the term ‘endogenous factors’?
factors that contribute to a place’s character that come from within the place (local)
Give 2 examples of exogenous factors
- people such as migrants or tourists; changing quantity of people and demography
- Investment; leads to regeneration etc.
- resources; ports and money allow trade and imports
Give 2 examples of endogenous factors
- natural physical features (harbours, beaches, rivers etc.); impact the industries present and leisure activities
- infrastructure; enhances local living conditions
- land use; urban or rural areas
