PKM Obstetrics lecture 2 - aa Flashcards
What is bloody show?
when cervical mucus plug is lost
What is the average length of a first labor?
24 hours
What is the average length of a non-first labor?
12 hours
Name four things that contractions accomplish.
- cervical effacement
- cervical dilation
- movement of fetus through pelvis
- positive effect on neonate’s respiratory abilities
If you perform a vaginal exam on a woman in labor and all you feel is babyhead, how dilated is she?
All the way - 10 cm
If fetus is loose and floating above pelvis, what is the station?
-3
What is station 0?
When the presenting baby part is at the level of the maternal ischial spines
What are the 3 stages of labor?
Stage 1: from onset of labor to 10 cm dilation
Stage 2: from 10 cm dilation to birth of neonate
Stage 3: from birth of neonate to delivery of placenta
When in the stages of labor does pushing take place?
Pushing can start at the beginning of stage 2 (when fully dilated)
What are the three phases of Stage 1?
Early (0-4 cm dilation)
Active (4-7 cm dilation)
Transition (8-10 cm dilation)
What is the fetal “presentation”?
The fetal part most dependent. 95% are vertex/cephalic
What is the fetal “position”?
The orientation of the fetus’ presenting part relative to the mother’s pelvis
What is the fetal “lie”?
Either transverse or longitudinal - relationship of the long part of the fetus to the long part of the uterus
If the presentation is vertex, what is the reference point for determining position?
occiput
If the presentation is breech, what is the reference point for determining position?
sacrum
