Pitot Static System Flashcards
Function of the static port
Provides static air pressure to VSI, altimeter, and airspeed indicator
Describe the pitot tube and its function
Provides ram air pressure to the airspeed indicator. Has heating capabilities to remove ice, and a drain tube on the back
What happens if your pitot tube becomes clogged, but drain hole remains open?
Airspeed indicator drops to zero because drain hole and static soure are still open.
What happens if the drain tube and the ram air hole on the pitot tube are clogged?
Airspeed will remain at what was last indicated, and minor changes will occur with altitude if the static port is not clogged.
What happens if just the static port becomes clogged?
Airspeed will indicate faster than actual, altimeter freezes at last indicated altitude, vsi will remain at 0 l. fixable with alternate static source
What can you do in an emergency if you know the static port is clogged, and the alternate static source is not working?
Break glass on VSI - readings will not be 100% accurate
What are the three types of air pressure?
Static, dynamic, and total
Static air pressure
Ambient air pressure around plane
Dynamic air pressure
Ram air pressure for the pitot tube; the pressure of the air on the face of the plane
Describe the altimeter
Uses static pressure to sense altitude
Describe the VSI
Compares static air pressure from the static port to ambient air pressure in the plane through a small hole in the instrument to determine increase or decrease in altitude gain
