Pitching-Key coaching points Flashcards
What should your aim be like when pitching?
As per chipping, square to the ball and target line
What would you explain in regards to holding the club when it comes to chipping?
Varying the height of the hands on the grip will help change distance
Lower down=shorter distance
Higher up=closer to maximum distance
What should the stance of pitching be in comparison to chipping?
The stance widens from that of a chip shot and should just be inside shoulder width
How is weight distribution in pitching different to that of chipping?
Weight distribution should be more even than chipping but the weight should still be favouring the left side (60/40)
If a pupil is struggling to strike the ball correctly or turn through the ball properly what should you potentially introduce?
Withdraw the left foot slightly (Move it back a touch) Keep right foot in the same position, this should encourage a greater hip rotation and allow them to clear the left hand side.
What does the extra motion of pitching (in contrast to chipping) encourage?
It encourages the wrists to start and hinge in the backswing
At halfway back where should the left arm and wrists be? And where should the club be positioned in relation to the left arm?
The left arm will be level to the floor
Wrists will have hinged the club so that it’s 90 degrees to the left arm
In the downswing where should the weight flow to?
The weight should flow to the left leg
What will the follow through of the pitching action mirror?
mirror the back swing in regards to length and shape
Give two activities you could use for pitching?
Following from the chipping, the same underarm toss exercise. Demonstrates how motion needs to increase in size in order to cover more distance
.Make two practice swings brushing the club on the grass where the club will be-picture a plane coming into land, touch down and then taking off again, not a crash landing!
