About 70% of 1 mora nouns fall into the 頭高 category. Primarily chinese origin words and words expressing ideas or concepts
The remaining 30% are primarily, but not entirely everyday nouns and objects and fall into the 平板 category

Pattern 1: If the later part of the compound is constant then the downstep falls on the second mora of the last word. (Last element is 平板 or 尾高)
Pattern 2: The downstep falls on the same place as it normally would in the last word. (Last element is 頭高 or 中高)
