Pipelines Flashcards
External Floating Roof Tank
Characterized by ladder present on side and sometimes seen across the top of full tanks.
Internal Floating Roof Tank
Characterized by cone or dome roof usually with overflow vents around top of sidewall.
Pipeline right of way markers
- Product being pumped through pipeline
- Owner/Operator
- Emergency Phone Number
Spherical storage tank
High pressure gases.
Pressure relief valve at top.
Lack of pressure relief valve may indicate cryogenic liquid
Vertical Cryogenic
Tank in tank.
Liquefied gases.
Set on legs on concrete pad.
Usually a radiator is present nearby the tank to help maintain auto refrigeration.
Ordinary (Cone) roof.
May also be geodesic dome.
Weak seam construction- Roofs are weakly welded to sidewalls as safety precaution in event of fire/explosion.
Lines colored Red vs. Lines colored Yellow
Red = Liquid Line
Yellow = Vapor
Color codes may be industry or site specific NOT federal or state laws
7 safety features and devices found at fixed bulk storage facilities
- Tank spacing

Three ways products in pipelines can be separated.
- Shipped as mixed (commingled) and re-separated at the point of use. MOST COMMON
- Separated by a plug (pig) or sphere (ball)
- May be separated by a quantity of water
