Pipeline Construction Flashcards
1
Q
Step 1 Construction Staging Areas and Storage Zones
A
- Staging areas and storage yards are cleared along the ROW 2. Areas used to stockpile pipe, fuel tanks, equipment etc. 3. Construction of access roads
2
Q
Step 2 Clear Cutting the Right Of Way
A
- Clear out trees, brush, any other objects in the way of the ROW
3
Q
Step 3 Excavating the Trench
A
- Digging the trench that the pipe will be placed in. 2. Hydro-Excavation, back hoes, and dozers are used.

Step 4 Piphttps://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/212/001/423/q_image_thumb.png?1492889299e Transport/Stringing/Assembly

A
- Pre-coated pipes are trucked from staging area to ROW 2. Pipes are laid out in order along the ROW 3. Certain pipe sections are bent with pipe bending tool to allow pipeline to follow planned route and terrain. 4. Pipe Sections are welded together, sand blasted, and coated to prevent corrosion. 5. Weld joints are inspected with x ray to ensure quality.
5
Q
Step 5 Obstacles: Roads and Streams
A
- Boore tunnels under roads with an auger machine to place the pipe. 2. Streams and Rivers a. Streams are dammed and trench is dug within streambed b. Pumps are brought in to divert water while construction occurs.
6
Q
Step 6 Testing and Restoration
A
- Pipe is inspected and the trench is filled in. 2. After trench is filled in, pipeline integrity is inspected using hydrostatic testing. Millions of gallons of water are pumped from rivers at high pressures. 3. After this the ROW is seeded and fertilized.
7
Q
Step 7 Additional Infrastructure
A
- Compressor Stations a. facilities that maintain pressure level within pipeline 2. Valve Stations b. built above the ROW along the pipeline allowing operators to shut off line for maintenance and emergencies. 3. Metering Stations c. Built along length of pipelines to provide measure of flow of gas.
8
Q
3 Main Reasons to Pig Pipeline
A
- to batch or separate dissimilar products 2. displacement purposes 3. internal inspection
9
Q
3 Types of Pigs
A
- Utility Pigs a. performs cleaning, separating, or dewatering. 2. In Line Inspection Pigs b. provide info on condition of line. 3. Gel Pigs c. used in conjunction with conventional pig to optimize pipeline dewatering, cleaning, and drying tasks.
