Workover Rig Basics

Drill String

A
  1. String of drill pipe that transmits drilling fluid (via the mud pumps) and torque (via the kelly drive or top drive) to the drill bit.
  2. loosely applied to the assembled collection of the drill pipe, drill collars, tools and drill bit. 3. The drill string is hollow so that drilling fluid can be pumped down through it and circulated back up the annulus (the void between the drill string and the casing/open hole).

Work Over Process

A
  1. First the well must be killed using a pump truck or kill truck
  2. Rig arrives and lines are unspooled from side of derrick before raised over well. This process of lines, raising derrick is known as rigging up.
  3. Rig then performs work

Employees and Responsibilities on Workover Rig

A
  1. Tool Pusher - Acting Supervisor of Rig.
  2. Operator -Controls crane and derrick that hauls pipe in and out of well.
  3. Derrick Hand - responsible for everything above ground of rig. Assist operator
  4. Floorhand - assists the 3 people above. laying new pipe, removal old tubing, moving equipment around etc.

Hydro-Excavation

A
  1. Utilizes pressurized water to break up soil.
  2. Preferred method for reasons such as, safe, non destructive, cost efficient.
  3. Eliminates a lot of labor costs associated with traditional digging. Minimizes environmental impacts as well.
