What is a pilot study?
A small scale trial run of the planned investigation.
Do pilot studies have lots of participants?
It will likely have a small number of PPs and its purpose is to check the procedure and that the investigation runs smoothly.
Why are pilot studies used?
Try out questions on self-report data gathering methods.
In observations it could be to test the behavioural categories are suitable.
It allows for the researcher to identify any potential issues and modify the design or procedure.
PPs may suggest appropriate changes.
E.g. they may admit that they guesses the purpose of the study and changes could be made to avoid this. They may also report if instructions were clear.
