Pilot Studies Flashcards
What is meant by a pilot study?
A small scale trial run of the research before the real main scale research take place to identify any problems and amend them.
When does a pilot study take place ?
Before real main scale research takes place
What’s the point of a pilot study?
Identify problems and amend them
What are the aims/purpose of a pilot study?
- Check standardised procedures and general design
- Check amount of time given to ppts is enough to complete task
- For questionnaire or interviews to make sure the questions are clear
- For observations to check coding systems and behavior systems are understood, check observer/camera is in good position to see behaviors
- Extraneous variables can be identified and eliminated
- Ask ppts to discuss experiences of experiment
- Any problems can be identified and adjusted before main study
Pilot study’s check what for questionnaires and interviews?
Make sure questions are clear
Pilot study’s check what for observations?
Coding systems and behavior categories are understood, check observer/camera in good position
Pilot study’s let us check what three things?
Standardised procedures
General design
Amount of time given is enough to complete task
Pilot studies let us identify…..and eliminate them
Extraneous variables
Pilot studies allow ppts to discuss what?
Experiences of the study
