IV , DV, Hypothesis Flashcards
What is the IV?
Variable that is changed or manipulated by researcher to see if it has an effect on the DV
What’s the DV?
The variable that’s the researcher measured to see the effect of the IV
Hypothesis is…
A specific testable statement where researcher predicts what will happen between variables
What is a directional hypothesis?
Researcher predicts what direction the results will go in
How to write a directional hypothesis…
There will be significantly higher/faster/more (DV) when ppts (IV) compared to when ppt(IV)
What’s a non-directional hypothesis?
Researcher doesn’t know what direction results will go in and they don’t predict the direction
How to write a non-directional hypothesis….
There will be a significant difference in (DV) when ppts (IV) compared to when ppts (IV)
What is a null hypothesis?
No direction
Results gained due to chance
When do you use a directional hypothesis?
All past research has shown
Previous research has shown
Most past research had shown
When a direction is indicated
When do you use a non-directional hypothesis?
New area of research
Limited previous research
Previous research has been mixed
No previous research to indicate the direction of the results.
