Pilot Requirements Flashcards
What is the minimum aeronautical experience required for an airplane instrument rating? [61.65]
-50 hrs X/C PIC
(10 hours in airplanes)
-40 hrs actual or simulated instrument time
(15 hours with CFII)
-3 hours in last 2 calendar months
(Prior to practical test)
-250NM X/C Flight
FAR 61.65(d) (1) (2)(i)
What does the 250 NM Flight consists of?
An IFR ATC FILED X/C flight consists of:
- 250 NM
- Along Airways or directed ATC routing
- An IAP at each airport
- 3 different types of IAPs using NAV systems
FAR 61.65 (d) (2)(ii)(A)(B)(C)
When can you log instrument time?
Only for that flight time when the aircraft is solely operated by reference to instruments under actual or simulated instrument flight conditions.
FAR 61.51
When can you log an instrument approach?
When the IAP is flown past the FAF under actual IMC or under simulated conditions.
(FAR 61.51(g)(3) and 61.57(c))
(InFO15012)
What personal documents are you required to have before flying? [61.3 and FCC]
Pilot Certificate
Medical
Government issued ID
Restricted radiotelephone operator license (International Flights)
What preflight information is required for IFR flight?
Hint: As PIC, what information are you required to become familiar with before each flight? [91.103]
NOTAMS Weather [Reports and Forecasts] Known traffic delays [ATC] Runway lengths [Intended use] Alternates [If flight cannot be completed as planned] Fuel requirements Takeoff and Landing (Performance Data)
What checklist can you perform to make an educated decision as to whether or not it will be safe to go on a flight?
PIC (Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Emotion)
Aircraft (Airworthiness, Performance, Equipment)
enVironment (WX, Terrain, Airports/rwy conditions)
External pressures (Mission at hand, [e.g get-there-itis])
State some examples about the IM SAFE checklist
Illness - Do I have any symptoms, how do I feel today?
Medication - Any prescribed/over the counter drugs
Stress - Any current life events stressing me out?
Alcohol - “8 hours bottle to throttle”; do not exceed .04%
Fatigue - Did I get a good night sleep?
Emotion - Did I just get broken up with? (etc)
What makes you IFR current?
Within the preceding 6 calendar months have logged:
[at least]
6 IAPs
Holding tasks/procedures
Intercepting and Tracking
Under actual or simulated flight conditions
6-6 HIT
Can you use a simulator or flight training device to log the 6-6 HIT requirement?
Yes
Provided an authorized instructor is present to observe that time and signs the person’s logbook or training record to verify the time and the content of the training session.
(FAR 61.51(g)(4))
Can you use an Approved Training Device [ATD] to log any currency requirements?
YES
Within the 2 calendar months preceding the month of the flight
Have performed:
-6-6 HIT on the ATD
Plus:
-3 hours of instrument experience.
-2 unusual attitude recoveries in a descending Vne airspeed condition
AND
-2 unusual attitude recoveries while in an ascending, stall speed condition.
(FAR 61.57(c)(3))
Six months have lapsed and you have not completed 6-6 HIT. (You’re not current)
Can you go flying IFR?
What can you do to become current at this point?
IFR Flying cannot be attempted unless:
6-6 HIT is accomplised
With safety pilot (under simulated conditions)
(An instructor or pilot examiner can be used in lieu of safety pilot)
What requirements must the Safety Pilot meet?
Hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate
[Appropriate category and class]
Medical [Appropriate]
Be Instrument rated (If flight under actual IMC)
Must have adequate vision forward and to each side of the aircraft.
Aircraft must have dual-control system.
FAR 61.3 61.23 91.109
When is an instrument rating required for flight?
-Class A
-Under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR)
-Less than VFR WX Minimums
-Special VFR at night in controlled airspace
(Class B/C/D AND E)
FAR 61.3(e) 91.157
What recency of experience requirements must you meet as PIC under IFR?
6-6 HIT
FLIGHT REVIEW
3 T/O (90 days)
3 LANDINGS (90 days)
(Full stop night landings)
(Full stop in Tailwheel)
