When can icing be expected?
Anytime there is visible moisture and the temperature is near or below freezing
What types of ice exist?
Clear, rime, and mixed.
When does rime ice form?
Small water drops after initial impact, freezes rapidly before the drops have time to spread over the aircraft surface.
When does clear ice form?
Forms when water droplets are large and the remaining liquid portion of the water drop flows out over the aircraft surface, gradually freezes forming a sheet of solid ice.
Where can clear ice be found?
In rain or in cumuliform clouds.
What are some characteristics of clear ice?
Heavy and clear, very hard to detect.
What is a characteristic of rime ice?
Has white porous appearance.
Where can rime ice be found?
Stratiform clouds or light drizzle.
What two basic hazards are created by ice or frost?
The resulting malformation of the airfoil could decrease the amount of lift and increase drag.
The additional weight and unequal formation of the ice could cause unbalancing of the aircraft, making it hard to control.
What is mixed ice?
A mixture of both clear and rime ice.
When can mixed iced be formed?
It can be formed rapidly when water drops vary in size or when liquid drops intermingle with snow or ice particles.
Ice particles become embedded in clear ice, building a very rough accumulation, sometimes in mushroom shape on leading edges.
