Privileges & Limitations

A

Private pilots cannot act as PIC for flight which carry persons or property for compensation or hire.

Can operate as PIC if:

  • Only if it is incidental to the business
  • Pays pro-rata share of the operating costs of a flight with passengers provided the expenses only include: fuel, oil, airport expenditures or rental fees
  • Charitable, non-profit or community event flights if the sponsor and pilot comply with the requirements of §91.14
  • Can be reimbursed for search and rescue operations for short term operating costs for a government agency only
  • May carry out demonstration flight to a potential buyer if over 200 logged hours.
  • Can act as PIC of an aircraft towing a glider if aeronautical experience meets the requirements of §61.69
  • Production test flight for a light sport aircraft if they meet the aeronautical experience requirements or §21.190

  • 3x takeoff and landings
  • If tail wheel they must be to a full stop.

A

Being current means that a pilot has accomplished the minimum regulatory requirements within a specific time period so he or she can exercise the privileges of the certificate.

Being proficient means that a pilot is capable of conducting the flight with a high degree of competence.
