Elegibility requirements for a PPL?
Be 17 y/o
Read, write, understand, speak English
Have a third class Med Cert
Received required ground and flight training endorsements
Meet the applicable experience (40hrs)
Passef the knowledge and practical tests
Privileges of a PPL
May act as PIC:
In connection with a business as long as it does not involve property or passengers for compensation.
For a charity or nonprofit in accordance to 14 CFR 91.146
May be reimbursed for operating expenses (fuel, oil, airport/rental fees)
Demonstrate an aircraft to a buyer if pilot is a salesman and has over 200hrs
May tow a glider or unpowered aircraft if they meet the 14 CFR 61.69
May conduct a production flight test for certification in the light sport category.
Limitiations of a PPL
Cannot act as PIC of carrying passengers or property for hire.
May not pay less than equal share of operating expenses (fuel, oil, airport and rental fees)
Explain “May not pay less than pro-rata share of the operating expenses of a flight”
Pilot cannot pay less than his equal share of a flight’s expenses. Only applies to fuel, oil, airport or rental fees.
Can the pilot share the costs of an annual inspection with passengers?
No. A pilot cannot share fixed or long operating costs with passengers.
What must a pilot have with him or in the aircraft to act as a flight crew member?
Pilot Certificate
Photo ID
Medical Certificate
What documents are you required to to show an FAA inspector during a ramp inspection?
Airman Certificate
Medical Certificate
Authorization or license (Part 61)
Photo ID
Who may request documents and ID from a pilot?
Administrator
Authorized NTSB rep
Authorized TSA rep
Federal, state or local law enforcement
What is a high-performance airplane and what must you do to fly one as PIC?
An airplane with motr than 200HP.
To act as PIC you must have:
Received and logged ground and flight training from an authorized instructor.
Received and logged a one-time endorsement certifying you are proficient to operate a high performance airplane.
Other than high performance and complex aircraft, what other types require specific training and endorsements?
- High altitude airplane - pressurized aircraft above 25,000ft MSL
- Tailwheel airplane
What is a complex airplane and what must you have to act as PIC of one?
An airplane that has retractable landing gear, flaps and variable pitch propeller. Includes airplanes with Full Authority Digital Engine Control.
Must have:
Training from an authorized instructor in a complex airplane or flight simulator
Received a one-time endorsement in the logbook from an authorized instructor.
Define - Category, Class and Type
Category - broad classification of aircraft (airplane, rotorcraft, glider, etc)
Class - classification within a category of similar operating characteristics (single-engine, multi-engine, etc)
Type - specific make and basic model of aircraft that do not change its handling or flight characteristics (B-737, C-150)
Requirements to remain current as a PPL?
Complete a flight review within 24 months in an aircraft for which the pilot is rated and received a logbook endorsement.
To carry passengers:
In the previous 90 days
3 takeoffs and landings in the same category and class.
If at night, 3 takeoffs and landings to a full stop 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise
Is it a violation of any regulation to not log your recent flights?
No. You are only required to log training and experience necessary to meet requirements for a certificate, rating or flight review.
Can you log PIC time in an airplane you are not rated for?
Yes. You may log PIC time, but you may not act as PIC
