Q

How can a pilot determine if an aircraft conforms to its approved type design and is in condition for safe operation?

A

a. Maintenance, alterations have been performed in accordance to Parts 21, 43, 91 and that the aircraft is registered. The pilot ensures all required inspections, maintenance, preventive maintenance, repairs and alterations have been documented in the maintenance records.
b. For safe operation a pilot conducts a thorough preflight inspection for wear, deterioration, structural damage, fluid leaks, tire wear, instruments, equipment, etc. If an unsafe condition exists or inoperative instruments are found the pilot uses the guidance in 14 CFR 91.213

A

Unless the AD states otherwise, you may apply to the FAA for a special flight permit following the procedures in 14 CFR 21.199

17
Q

What is a type certificate data sheet (TCDS)?

A

Lists the specifications, conditions and limitations under which airworthiness requirements were met for a specific product (engine, fuel type, engine limits, airspeed limits, max weight, min crew, etc)

18
Q

What is a STC?

A

Supplemental Type Certificate - FAA’s approval of a major change in type design of a previously approved type certificated product. Authorizes the alteration to an airframe, engine or component that has an authorized type certificate. Alterations made not specified or authorized in the TCDS.

19
Q

What is an aircraft registration certificate?

A

Issued to the owner as evidence of registration of the aircraft with the FAA Aircraft registry. Must be in the aircraft at all times.

20
Q

Does a registration certificate expire?

A

Yes. Expires on the last day of the month, 3 years after it was issued. A temporary registration is valid for no more than 90 days.

21
Q

Where can you find information on the placards and marings required in the airplane?

A

FAA Type certificate data sheet

22
Q

Examples of placards and markings required in an airplane

A

Placards: Flight maneuvers allowed (steep turns, spins, stalls), maneuvering speed, compass calibration card, remove control lock before starting
Markings: airspeed indicator markings (white, green, yellow, red) cockpit control markings, fuel, oil, coolant filler openings.
