How are Puritans different from Pilgrims?
Puritans wanted to reform Anglican Church. They tried to stay in the church.
What did the Puritans do?
Valued hard work and education
Built town halls to hold meetings where male church members could vote & discuss problems
What else about the Puritans?
Wanted freedom to practice THEIR version of Christianity
Were not tolerant of other beliefs
Non believers must leave colony

Who was Roger Williams and how did he shock Puritan leaders?
Did not want to take land by force from Native Americans
Did not force people to attend church
*Separation of the church and state- helped grow concept of democracy
Left MA and founded Rhode Island that followed above beliefs
What did Anne Hutchinson do?
Held meetings to discuss things that challenged church authority
Thought God spoke directly to you, not through ministers
Why did the Pilgrims come to America?
Wanted to practice faith freely
considered heretics
people who dissented with the church and wanted to break away
