Who was John Smith?
Leader of the Jamestown settlement. Developed a trade relationship with Powhatan tribe who taught them to grow crops.
Made a rule that required people to work to eat.
Who else helped Jamestown?
Pocahontas provided food and communication between Powhatan and settlers. Married John Rolfe.
Prosperity when John Rolfe began growing tobacco and exporting it to England. It became first cash crop of the Americas and saved the colony.
Attracted indentured servants.
Define and describe England’s surplus population.
There were many surplus people who wanted to get away from poor conditions/overcrowding, and improve their lives.
Attracted many indentured servants to Jamestown. Their passage was paid in exchange for 7 years of labour.
Women who needed husbands.- Stabilized colony through “traditional” female duties.
Debtors were sent over to relieve prisons.
What happened?
1606- James I gave the VA company a charter to settle in Chesapeake Bay. The closest river was named after the king~James River
People expected to find gold and did not bring food/supplies.
