Causes of the pilgrimage of grace
People were unhappy with the changes made to the church and religion.
Henry dissolved monasteries and sold off the land to make himself rich.
Monasteries provided education and alms for people, and were the centre of people’s lives.
They were scared of the dissolution of churches due to the act of suppression 1536
People feared the quick transition from Catholicism to Protestantism
Nobles lost favour as they were catholics
People protested due to economical hardships. Poor harvest of 1355 and 1356. Inflation and increase in food prices. Henry raises taxes also. People were afraid of poverty
Events
1536 an uprising broke out in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire led by lawyer Robert Aske.
Protesters were peaceful
8000 pilgrims captured towns in the north
Henry III sent Duke of Norfolk, a catholic, to negotiate with them, and the rebels went home. They believed their demands would be granted, e.g. no more dissolution of monasteries, and a parliament at York, and rebels all pardoned
1537, revolt broke out again, and they attacked a castle. Henry IIIV took back his pardon. Killed 216 people and hung Robert Aske in 1537
Significance?
Serious threat, as lords, knights, gentry and commoners were all involved. 50,000 people armed men involved in the north.
Total failure.
No more religious rebellions took place
Henry ended Catholic Church powers in England
Henry dissolved rest of the monasteries in 1539
