When were corn laws passed
1815
Why were they passed and what did they do
Passed due to the war with France. It taxed all corn and wheat which was imported into the uk
What effect did this have
It led to an increase in bread costs, which led to higher wages being needed, and unemployment rose
What was introduced to counteract this? In 1828
A ‘sliding scale’ was introduced to regulate corn prices, but the prices were still high

Pressurise group which was set up to try make the government repeal corn laws

Motion to repeal corn laws was denied

They used pamphlets and news paper articles.

Unfair that basic food prices are increasing
More money can be used to buy meat to help farmers

They targeted election seats to pressurise the government

1845 Crop failures in England and Scotland, and a bad harvest. Caused bread prices to rise and famine.

- However the PM Robert peel got backlash from his party, and never went to hold office again
