- enables Christians to share their faith with others from around the world. strengthens the sense of community and reminds that, despite denominations, we are all one as the body of Christ
- the journey allows you to strengthen your relationship God and live the life that He intended for us

- deepen a Christian’s faith in God, allowing them to reconnect at a time that they may feel that they’re drawing away from God

- lourdes is alot more popular, 5 million pilgrims a year
- iona was alot harder to get to with rough roads and uncertain tides
- lourdes focuses on healing where-as iona focuses on themselves and the direction of their lives
- lourdes shows large community spirit whereas iona shows closeer community where you can interact with a few people deeply

why does lourdes have the reputation it has today

- it is believed that in 1858 a woman claimed to see a woman in white (who was said to be the Virgin Mary)
- ever since she appeared 17 more times and miraculous cures have been associated with lourdes ever since

what is an opposing view against going on pilgrimages (effect of them)
A
- the money could be better spent on helping others and making a permanent difference
- because the renewal while on pilgrimage quickly wears off when pilgrims return home

what is an opposing view against going on pilgrimages (spiritual devlopment)
A
- they arent needed and arent more effective than normal prayer
- because spiritual development can be gained at home in prayer and reflection
- prayers and healings can happen anywhere as God hears all prayers
