Piggy Flashcards
1
Q
piggy quotes - beginning
A
‘on account of my asthma’
‘I didn’t expect nothing’
2
Q
‘on account of my asthma’
A
- piggy is already an outsider
- he has a disadvantage to the other boys, perhaps making him less likely to survive
- asthma requires an inhaler which is advanced equipment -> this links piggy to the outside world
3
Q
‘I didn’t expect nothing’
A
- piggy is an outsider
- his use of language tells us he is of a lower class than the other boys
4
Q
piggy quotes - middle
A
“what are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages?”
5
Q
“what are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages?”
A
- this quote show the real intention of the book, which is to show how easy it is under pressure to fall into savage-like behaviour
- shows the struggle to build a civilisation and Piggy fearing if they fail to build a civilisation, savagery will take over the island
- the boys are loosing grip on the rules and ideals, which is all they have left to hold onto
6
Q
piggy quotes - end
A
‘the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist’
“I thought they wanted the Conch”
7
Q
‘the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist’
A
- throughout the book the conch represented civilisation
- the conch got destroyed with Piggy’s death -> civilisation died with piggy
- grants the tribe ability to kill as this was first intentional murder
- a ‘thousand white fragments’ symbolises the conch is beyond repair -> if it was broken into 2 or 3 pieces, it could be repaired -> it is in a thousand pieces so is unusable
- ‘ceased to exist’ shows the power of the conch has gone, allowing savagery to descend over the island
8
Q
“I thought they wanted the Conch”
A
- more worried about losing the conch than losing his sight
- piggy is very ordered around order, like most adults
